The Benefits of Coconut Oil

So two weeks ago I wrote about the benefits of drinking lemon water.  This week I wanted to write about coconut oil.  This oil is said to be the very best because it is a medium chain oil.  I often put my spin on things, but I like to back it up with facts.  My writing isn’t just anecdotal, it’s scientifically proven.    Not everything I say is going to be supported with a controlled experiment.  Information is from what I have read or heard from doctors that are well respected in their field.  Let’s move on with the meat and gravy of coconut oil.

Over the years I’ve been saying to use coconut oil both externally and internally.   Coconut oil has three properties; antifungal, antibacterial, and antiviral.  Years ago people believed all fats were bad.  Even my mom believed fats should be eliminated from your diet because of what we were told.  Today because of science, we know differently.  Not all fats are the same due to their chains and bonds.  I’m not an expert or a doctor, but I know from experience that this oil improved my well-being.  To answer the question about coconut oil, “Will it help you lose weight?”  Consuming coconut oil has been proven to increase energy levels by five percent per day, which will in turn burn more calories causing you to lose weight.  How is this true?  The oil is so beneficial that it speeds up your digestive rate.  I’ve been touting this oil for years.  The more I read about it, the the better it gets.  One article I read suggests ingesting 3.5 tablespoons a day and here’s the best part…no side effects.  Okay now that that’s established, let me discuss the mechanics.

Coconut oil is a medium chain triglycerides fatty acid.  Essentially not all fats are the same like you would find with meat or cheese.  These are long chain fatty acids that metabolize differently.  When coconut oil is enzymatically digested, it also forms a monoglyceride called monolaurin.  Fifty percent of this oil contains 12 carbons of lauric acid.

Both lauric acid and monolaurin can kill harmful pathogens like bacteria, viruses and fungi.

For example, these substances have been shown to kill the bacteria Staphylococcus Aureus (a very dangerous pathogen) and the yeast Candida Albicans, a common source of yeast infections in humans.

Candida has been know to cause our bodies all sorts of medical problems, even cancer.  Most doctors will prescribe an antifungal medication when the Candida (bad bacteria) becomes over-populated.  This medication has side effects.  No known side effect is associated with the consumption of this oil.

Unlike  long chain fatty acids, MCT’s go straight to the liver from the digestive tract, where they are used as a quick source energy or turned into so-called ketone bodies, which can have therapeutic effects on brain disorders like Epilepsy and Alzheimer’s Disease.

In addition, fewer health issues and hardly any heart disease have been exhibited in populations where 60 percent of their caloric intake are coconut based products. Studies conducted in humans and rats have shown an increase in good HDL fats have actually lowered the bad LDL fats.

In conclusion, coconut oil was grouped as a bad fat years ago.  This was and is a myth. In fact coconut has many health benefits, even more than listed above.  If your thinking of consuming coconut oil, please get advice from your physician.  Also use organic, unrefined coconut oil.  Also remember when it comes to nutrition, calories are not all equal.
