Psoriasis & Liver Function

Our liver is responsible to cleanse the body of many impurities.   When this organ is mistreated by the foods we eat and drink it begins to fail. Good news is that it regenerates itself through proper nutrition.  Psoriasis patients need to pay close attention to liver function.  Here are some signs that indicate your liver is not functioning correctly.

1. Abdominal Swelling

A swollen abdomen can point to a condition called ascites, where liver malfunction leads to an imbalance of proteins and other compounds, and fluid builds up in the tissues. The main symptom of ascites is a pronounced potbelly, and often signals cirrhosis. Sometimes swelling occurs in the hands, feet, and ankles, as gravity draws the excess fluid down to the extremities.

2. Bruising

A damaged liver produces fewer of the proteins necessary for blood clotting, which means you may bleed and bruise more easily.

3. Fatigue and Weakness

It can be easy to dismiss fatigue and lethargy as a normal side effect of a stressful life, but severe exhaustion could point to low blood oxygen levels and waste accumulation.

4. Loss of Appetite

Nausea, a disinterest in food, and weight loss are some early symptoms of liver problems. In fact, the initial stages of hepatitis often bring flu-like symptoms, including digestive discomfort.

As liver damage progresses, more pronounced symptoms may appear. You may start to feel pain in certain areas, and you might see some startling changes in appearance.

5. Jaundice

As liver function declines and waste can no longer be eliminated from the body efficiently, the bile pigment called bilirubin can build up in the bloodstream. In turn, the skin and eyes can take on a yellowish color, urine will appear darker, and stools will appear lighter.

6. Abdominal Pain

When cirrhosis begins to cause pain, it typically comes in the upper right abdomen, or just under the lower right ribs. The pain can be throbbing or stabbing, and it may come and go. If the pain is so intense that you can’t sit still, you should seek immediate medical attention.

7. Personality Changes

Cognitive issues can develop when toxins accumulate in the blood and move to the brain. Confusion and problems with concentration are often the first signs of toxin overload, but they can lead to forgetfulness, changes in sleeping habits, and unresponsiveness.

8. Persistent Vomiting

While nausea and upset stomach are common early symptoms of liver disease, but as your liver’s ability to eliminate toxins decreases, your digestive distress will likely increase.  Ongoing nausea is a reaction to excess waste products in the body, and unexplained vomiting is often linked to liver problems.

Spotting the symptoms of liver damage is early is vital for effective treatment, so if you suspect a problem with your liver, take your concerns to your doctor right away. There are several tests that can quickly and painlessly reveal the extent of your liver damage, and that will determine the right course of therapy. The sooner you can halt the progression of your liver disease, the more healthy tissue you can save, and the better your liver’s chances of regeneration.

I personally was diagnosed with a fatty liver.  I totally reversed the symptoms by eating clean.  It took me roughly 6 months.  Proper nutrition is the treatment.   Have green smoothies everyday and avoiding processed foods will help you live a healthier lifestyle.  Thank you for reading.

Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis

My blogs are about real people.  These people share their stories in hopes that their experience will help others.  I think with all the stories I hear, and all the people that suffer, this is becoming a humanitarian issue.  We have effective medications available.  Too many people’s lives are being destroyed by this disabling disease.  Medications are only available to a select few.  Even then “Step Therapy” practices by insurance companies, block safer more effective treatments due to costs.
Psoriatic arthritis affects more than 1 million Americans.   Those numbers are staggering.  This disease is under-reported and often misdiagnosed.  PSA is often diagnosed after the onset of psoriasis, but does not necessarily occur in that order.  Joint pain and nail involvement is often a sign you have psoriatic arthritis.   Of course you should be seen by a rheumatologist or your dermatologist, who can evaluate your symptoms and diagnose you properly.

This story is by my friend David Heath.  He has both psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. Read more about PSA by visiting the National Psoriasis Foundation website and by joining our support group Overcoming Psoriasis . This is an uncut version.

“Hi Todd,

Sorry this has taken a while to get to you but life, holidays, and a 2-year-old boy tends to distract.

Anyway, my psoriasis first started in my scalp when I was around 11 or 12.  This was back in the early 70’s and psoriasis was pretty much unknown especially here in Australia with the amount of sunshine.

My parents, then the doctor, thought it was dandruff aggravated by wearing cricket caps in summer.  Problem was, it got worse in winter.  So I was told to use the usual dandruff shampoos like Celsun and the like.  Except it kept getting worse.  By the time I was 18 it was unbearable.  Another doctor and she diagnosed psoriasis. I was prescribed a coal tar cream and to use T-Gel shampoo.  The coal tar did nothing and T-Gel burnt like hell.

I suffered with this moving to England then back to Australia.  On return to Australia, I eventually found a hairdresser who’s daughter had psoriasis.  Shen recommended trying Sebitar shampoo.  The effects were almost immediate.  This was the mid 90’s.

Just when I thought thing were good, this insidious disease started on my chest and then the back.  This was 1999.  It started spreading across my torso.  Slowly at first.  In 2003 I moved to Johannesburg, South Africa.  It kep getting worse.  In about 2010, I went to a dermatological professor.  He prescribe Methotrexate, Folic Acid, Daivobet, and Dovate creams.  None of it worked.

I was also not told that you should not drink alcohol with MTX (I like wine at dinner).  In any event, after around 18 months, I stopped the MTX because of the expense and the psoriasis was getting worse.

I moved back to Australia in December 2014 and the psoriasis kept spreading.  I was referred to a Dermatologist in the hope of being put on Cosentyx or one of the new biologic agents.  Unfortunately, under the PBS in Australia, you have to fail 2 treatments to qualify for biologic agents.  The failed MTX qualified.  The Dermatologist put me on Neotigarson with a steroid cream and coal tar solution.  He also started me on pUVA.  Almost immediately the Neotigarson side-effects kicked in.  It was only when I looked up the side-effects I learned about the liver and kidney problems.  I stopped taking it immediately.  Also the creams as they were doing nothing.  Fortunately/unfortunately the pUVA is working so I will not qualify for the biologics but is has almost cleared the psoriasis except for the skin discolouration.

image

With the holidays I have had few pUVA treatments in the last 6 weeks and spots are coming back.  I need to look at the Vitamin D and Probiotic supplements as I cannot rely on pUVA for the rest of my life (though it does help giving a sun tan).

I also have Psoriatic Arthritis and Gout.  Sometimes difficult to tell between the 2 though I am learning.  With the gout I started a food and drink diary to tell the triggers.  It worked well, I have pretty much defined them.  If I start to get a gout attack, I hit it hard with Voltaren tablets.  Usually 200mg in an initial dose knocks it out right away.  If I leave it then it takes a while.

image

Back to Psoriasis, what I have found is diet makes a difference.  I have tried eating/drinking this and now eating/drinking that for periods of at least 6 months and it makes no difference.  IMO, this thing has a mind of its own.  Sunshine and salt water are the only naturals things that work.  Somewhat confirmed by the pUVA treatments.

So, I am now at the next stage in trying to keep this thing at bay.  I hope that Vitamin D and Probiotics help.  I shall see.

What I have found is there is very little support and knowledge of the disease in Australia.  I feel I want to start some sort of group/organization here but not sure how to go about it.  Any advice would be useful.  I would also like to be able to lobby the governments and regulators here to make medications more accessible and affordable.  To do that, I believe, we need a sizeable number of sufferers here.

Thanks for reading if you have made it this far.

Take care.  Your friend.

Mothering a child with Psoriasis

The unconditional love of a parent is tested in my next article.  Many people with good health take it for granted.  We see this time and time again.  It’s unnerving to hear about young adults abusing alcohol or drugs.  If they only knew about the people who struggle each day with illnesses.  Maybe those young adults would make better choices.  Good health is a gift that should be appreciated.  I remember as an adolescent we had a tv commercial that ran explaining, “This is your brain, This is your brain on drugs.”  They showed a frying pan with two sunny side up eggs being cooked.  The message was clear and concise.   As a parent, you hope your children stear clear of drugs and alcohol and take care of themselves. The challenges of being a parent are tested each and every day until your very last breath.

How about when you’re a parent of a child that has a chronic illness like psoriasis?  This inspiring young mom’s daughter developed our disease at a very young age.  I’m sure most of us that are living with this disease can relate with others who have the disease,  but how about a parent? I know personally one of the reasons why I raise awareness is the fear that my children might some day be diagnosed with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.  This is my greatest motivation to help the National Psoriasis Foundation find a cure.  My next guest explains her unwavering love for her daughter with psoriasis and her quest to clear her.

Roberta Bellatreccia is from Italy and this is her story in her own words.  She is a member of our support group Overcoming Psoriasis :

“Hi Todd, these are my 3 paragraphes.
Maybe my English is a bit rusty.

If I had to describe the relationship I have with my daughter’s psoriasis in 3 paragraphes, I would entitle them: awareness, “debut”, friendship.

image

AWARENESS
My daughter was diagnosed psoriasis at the age of 8. When she was 10 her skin was 100% covered, she lived many months of her life like an amphibious, hours in the bathtub with oil and warm water to have relief from the itch. In that period I often used to give her liquid food to avoid her cheek skin to rip while chewing solid food. I read so many documents, checked so many links, spoke to so many doctors, observed so many forums. In the meanwhile I washed so many blankets, hoovered so many floor square meters, changed so many pillowcases, sang so many sweet songs in the night, told so many funny stories, massaged so many harmful centimetres of a red itchy/scaly/loved skin, created so many new games and stories with dolls, food, plasticine, colours. An entire summer, an entire autumn and half of a winter together with my little, curly, frightened, wild ten years fighter. And during the following years, during her hard periods, my daughter’s behaviour “taught me” how to behave, what to say and, sometimes, when to keep in silence.
Our entire family “has got psoriasis”.
My daughter, my son, my husband, our dog. And me. The entire family has the strength to face it.
“Ohana”, as Lilo said! (Cit. “Lilo and Stitch”)

DEBUT
I sai my daughter was wild, to my eyes, because in spite of her skin, she never renounced to have a walk, or to go shopping looking for wooden or metal materials for her lovely creations, to have an ice cream or to buy food to cook with her family. Every exit was a “debut”: She had all the eyes on her skin. But sometimes they were “magic” eyes. Once, in a supermarket, a security guard stopped us. I was ready to arguments but this very big man knelt down to my daughter face, touched her arms, and asked her: “It is psoriasis, isn’t it? Can you see how big and handsome I am now? When I was your age my skin was like yours today. Never forget you are lovely, and you will be a gorgeous woman, and if anybody bothers you here, please, call me, today I’ll bee your body guard.”.
So many years ago, and I still cry when I tell or write this episode.

image

FRIENDSHIP
I certainly know I can’t defeat psoriasis. But I certainly can improve my daughter’s quality of life. We met some horrible people, but we met soooooo many lovely human beings, We have now some good friends among doctors, but also among people who supported Camilla during her quarrel with her skin. I said “quarrel”, because it is the term she used once to describe her psoriasis. Once, when she was 10, I asked her how she could describe her psoriasis. She said: “To me psoriasis is like Daniele (her lovely, sometimes/spiteful brother): we quarrel, we fight, but he is not at all always the winner. I sometimes win. I know he is my family, I can manage it.”.
Today my daughter is a lovely, 18 years old woman.
She still fights with psoriasis, and sometimes she feels she is winning.
To me, she wins every day.
Her problem has become her resource”.

Thank you Roberta for sharing your story about your lovely daughter.  Your love for her is resounding.  I know how difficult it is being a parent.  I’m sure this situation doesn’t make things easier.  Very powerful and inspiring story.  I pray that we celebrate the cure announcement together.

Empowering Psoriasis Patient

The landscape of the psoriasis and psa community is changing rapidly.  In the last five years I’ve seen more progress than can be imagined.  Everything seems to be in place for the development of safer more effective treatments.  I wouldn’t be surprise in the next twenty years scientists discover a cure.  I call it “snowball research,” mainly because as we move forward the amount of research being done for our disease is growing exponentially. I believe social media is the hill that is the downhill catalyst helping us generate inertia and velocity towards our goal.  Many patients are flocking to facebook, twitter, instagram, pinterest, wordpress blogs, to share their stories and pictures.  Many have become passionate and obsessed posting in support groups and participating in studies.

Patients are only part of the equation.  Pharmaceutical companies are competing for market share with newer safer medications.  The National Psoriasis Foundation is the leading advocate for our community.  I’m proud to say I am a member and have been for years.  I do what I can to drive traffic to their website through our support group Overcoming Psoriasis.  That’s where I met Maria Bascetta who is a personal trainer and health coach.  She launched her own personal website at www.mariabascetta.com.  I would like to share her story and pictures that she shared with me.  In her own words:

“SO. I started noticing signs of autoimmune disease when I was young.  Like 12-13 yrs old. Itchy scalp, eczema, hives all the time. Was diagnosed with mild psoriasis or eczema back then. Given tar shampoo, all the creams. Didn’t really work but skin didn’t get too bad.
Went away to college in DC at 18. Skin started to get worse around then. I wasn’t healthy. Smoke, drank, didn’t eat well. Then when I turned 20ish I started to get severe joint pain and all sorts of skin worsening symptoms. Got diagnosed with Lymes Disease after a year or trying to figure out what was happening. Met a nutritionist – she started helping me look at my diet. During the Lymes treatment which was heavy heavy antibiotics for over a year my skin got terrible and my joints got terrible. Was put on methotrexate which caused me to bruise all over and feel terrible. Skin cleared up. Took myself off the methotrexate and my joints and skin rebounded into worse than ever.
Found a Dr in Maryland (Dr Lawrence Green) – derm, who I really liked. Did Talconex, topicals. A course of light therapy with him. Took a while but my skin cleared. All the while working in the health industry and training people. My joints stabilized but were swollen a lot. I was in pain but was afraid to try anything after the methotrexate stint.
Went vegan, went paleo, cut alcohol, had quit smoking, started managing stress. Kept reading about what to do naturally. Did another course of light therapy when it came back. Worked but not as well. Continued topicals. It came back a year later. I dreaded summer. I covered up. My hands were swollen.
Bought my own light box … did that for a bout a year before I moved to Nashville in 2014 Oct. It worked. But it was getting hard to manage. Was blasting myself with light for over 30 min a day trying to get each body part. (smaller box). Ended up googling “new treatments” and reading about cosentyx and finding the facebook page.
Asked questions on the facebook page – met everyone. Got excited. Seemed safer than other meds and more successful. I always feared meds bc I am so young. (Im 32 now).  Found a dr – Dr. Jennifer Lee in TN. Talked to her. Called my old doc, Lawrence Green who is using Cosentyx for patients. Made the jump in May of 2015. Dr. Lee has been great. I cleared by mid June (started may 7th ish). My joints don’t hurt. My skin looks beautiful. It has been life changing. Been on one pen for the last three months.
I am thankful that I never gave up. I kept waiting and hoping and staying positive. I competed in grip this year b/c my hands don’t hurt. I have some residual damage but it’s minimal. Being sick has given me so much empathy and so many gifts when it comes to working with people. I know what it’s like to want to hide / to want to stop / to be hurting but to be a very physical being. Movement has been and will continue to be my life in many forms. I am very grateful.”
I’m inspired by Maria and her motivation to succeed.  If you want the support and the information to help you succeed I encourage you to join our group Overcoming Psoriasis on facebook.  While there you will gain helpful tips to control your psoriasis and psa.  You will be able to read about others and their challenges.  The group is closed so others who are not members will not see what is being posted or written.  The group is protected by five experience admins.  We have successfully directed people to doctors that specialize in our disease.  We discuss OTC treatments and Home remedies.  We are a one stop support group.  Nothing is left on the table.  Everyone is treated with dignity and we have strict rules and guidelines to keep the rift raft from trying to sell you overpriced “miracle cures.” Thank you Maria for being brave to share your story.

The Benefits of Coconut Oil

So two weeks ago I wrote about the benefits of drinking lemon water.  This week I wanted to write about coconut oil.  This oil is said to be the very best because it is a medium chain oil.  I often put my spin on things, but I like to back it up with facts.  My writing isn’t just anecdotal, it’s scientifically proven.    Not everything I say is going to be supported with a controlled experiment.  Information is from what I have read or heard from doctors that are well respected in their field.  Let’s move on with the meat and gravy of coconut oil.

Over the years I’ve been saying to use coconut oil both externally and internally.   Coconut oil has three properties; antifungal, antibacterial, and antiviral.  Years ago people believed all fats were bad.  Even my mom believed fats should be eliminated from your diet because of what we were told.  Today because of science, we know differently.  Not all fats are the same due to their chains and bonds.  I’m not an expert or a doctor, but I know from experience that this oil improved my well-being.  To answer the question about coconut oil, “Will it help you lose weight?”  Consuming coconut oil has been proven to increase energy levels by five percent per day, which will in turn burn more calories causing you to lose weight.  How is this true?  The oil is so beneficial that it speeds up your digestive rate.  I’ve been touting this oil for years.  The more I read about it, the the better it gets.  One article I read suggests ingesting 3.5 tablespoons a day and here’s the best part…no side effects.  Okay now that that’s established, let me discuss the mechanics.

image

Coconut oil is a medium chain triglycerides fatty acid.  Essentially not all fats are the same like you would find with meat or cheese.  These are long chain fatty acids that metabolize differently.  When coconut oil is enzymatically digested, it also forms a monoglyceride called monolaurin.  Fifty percent of this oil contains 12 carbons of lauric acid.

Both lauric acid and monolaurin can kill harmful pathogens like bacteria, viruses and fungi.

For example, these substances have been shown to kill the bacteria Staphylococcus Aureus (a very dangerous pathogen) and the yeast Candida Albicans, a common source of yeast infections in humans.

Candida has been know to cause our bodies all sorts of medical problems, even cancer.  Most doctors will prescribe an antifungal medication when the Candida (bad bacteria) becomes over-populated.  This medication has side effects.  No known side effect is associated with the consumption of this oil.

Unlike  long chain fatty acids, MCT’s go straight to the liver from the digestive tract, where they are used as a quick source energy or turned into so-called ketone bodies, which can have therapeutic effects on brain disorders like Epilepsy and Alzheimer’s Disease.

In addition, fewer health issues and hardly any heart disease have been exhibited in populations where 60 percent of their caloric intake are coconut based products. Studies conducted in humans and rats have shown an increase in good HDL fats have actually lowered the bad LDL fats.

In conclusion, coconut oil was grouped as a bad fat years ago.  This was and is a myth. In fact coconut has many health benefits, even more than listed above.  If your thinking of consuming coconut oil, please get advice from your physician.  Also use organic, unrefined coconut oil.  Also remember when it comes to nutrition, calories are not all equal.

Are Biological Medications safe to use?

Many patients with auto-immune diseases are on the fence when deciding which medication to use.  What are your options?  That’s a good question.  Your quality of life is important and you should take in consideration the risk/reward factors concerning your health.  Before we discuss risks I would like to share a story about a person from the “outback.”  This Aussie friend of mine has a interesting story that I think psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis patients can relate too.

FB_IMG_1449769510004
Two weeks on Cosentyx

I met Carly Boddice in our support group Overcoming Psoriasis.  I asked her if she would mind sharing her story and pictures.  She agreed and I’m delighted because after only two weeks she is seeing wonderful results using a biological medication.  This is what she wrote;

“I was first diagnosed with psoriasis at the age of 15 years old. My mum and sister and brother have psoriasis of the skin although mine was always the most severe and noticeable. My mum also suffers from psoriatic arthritis. Although my skin does gets me down, I feel blessed not to have to suffer the joint pain that my mum suffered for many years before biologics. Over the years I have tried many treatments from moisturisers to Dead Sea products, cortisones, oils, diets and the list goes on. My dad has been my world of support in my journey spending hundreds and thousands of dollars my whole life trying desperately to give me some relief. He would spend hours combing my scalp with oil as I could not see it to do it myself. You could say my dad has suffered just as much stress and anxiety as I have during this time feeling hopeless that he had to see me suffer all the years. His last resort was ordering me a very expensive uvb light from Canada and having it shipped here and installed into our house so I could use it on a daily basis. Although I saw excellent results with uvb and cortisone combined it never cleared my skin completely and soon returned with a vengeance when I fell pregnant with my first child. I had meetings with my dermatologist who was hesitant to put me on biologics due to me being a fertile woman and wishing to have more children. I suffered through my three pregnancies with almost 90% coverage. I would search the Internet every spare second looking for new drugs with less side effects and that’s when I came across the drug Cosentyx. It was going through the trial stage and still had a year to go. I found myself reading up about this drug everyday and the results that people were achieving gave me hope. Finally the day came that it was approved on the pbs system in Australia. I visited my dermatologist office the very next day and discussed going on this miracle drug , he was hesitant as he knew nothing about cosentyx and wanted me to try other drugs first that he was more familiar with. I pushed and gave him every reason, trial result and report I could find to persuade him, finally he gave in and his words were, you have certainly done your research so I guess I have to have a first time patient on this drug eventually. I was so excited when my prescription arrived and I could take my first dose. The first dose went smoothly with no side effects that I could notice . After a week I could notice a difference already the skin wasn’t getting scaly and the inflammation was dramatically reduced. As the second week approached everyone that knew me was commenting how great my skin looked. I felt content. I am so excited to see what the next couple of months are like and what further results this new miracle drug has in store for me. I cannot thank enough, Novartis and all the people who made this drug become a saviour for myself and so many people suffering like me. Bring on summer with shorts and pretty dresses.”FB_IMG_1449769393913

Cosentyx was approved in the US months before it was approved in Australia.  Novartis really has a winner here.  But this is only one of the many Biological medications that are approved for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.   How do you choose which one is right for you?   Most of us are prescribed these medications without researching the success and failure rate.  You have to be your own advocate.  There are many resources available so you can make an educated decision.  One which I highly recommend is the National Psoriasis Foundation.  The NPF is the largest and most respected organization for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis in the world.  Most of the treatments available today have been inspired by their relentless efforts to fund research.  New generation patients need to recognize that they are the engine of train bringing us safer and more effective medications.

I asked Carly what we’re some of the efffects and embarrassing moments she experienced while having the visible symptoms of psoriasis.

“Psoriasis has effected my work especially in winter when it cracks and got on the soles of my feet I found it hard to walk with. I have always had to wear long sleeves and long shorts even through summer which is extremely uncomfortable and sweaty to avoid criticism and negative comments. I have gotten short tempered and frustrated and it constantly plays on my mind to the point where it was the only thing I thought about on a daily basis which distracted my family and work life. I would snap at my children from frustration and even when they would come and sit on my lap and want a cuddle the pain from the cracks would be to much it would make me upset and them as well.”FB_IMG_1449769438093

She goes on to say how people treated her.  I know this first hand because I felt the same way.

“It has also effected me because It has always made me feel so drained and tired constantly I feel like I constantly need to sleep due to the inflammation. I have never had the energy to run around with my kids for long periods. I would visit the local pools with my family and people would look at me and say to their children come on let’s get out that lady must be contagious and people in the shops when their children would ask them what is that on my skin and their reply was don’t go to close it is probably contagious. I’m so glad I raise my children to be open minded and compassionate to not judge.”

From the pictures you can tell these biological medications are making a huge difference.  These drugs are under the scrutiny of many nutritionist. Tough choices are being made each day for which path to take.  The decision is between you and your doctor.  The risks have been diluted with many recent scientific studies.  If your thinking about any one particular medication, I encourage you to research your choice at Pubmed.com.  You may also want to post a question in our support group Overcoming Psoriasis.  Talk to patients directly.  You will be surprised by the information you discover.  If you like this article and the others I have written share your email with me so I can get you the latest medications being researched.

Why should you drink lemon water first thing in the morning?

The benefits of drinking lemon water in the morning are insurmountable.  But why is it important to drink this on a empty stomach first thing?  Many reasons but one of the most reassuring one is to flush out accumulated toxins.  Lemon water has essential trace minerals like magnesium, potassium, and calcium.   Natural occurring electrolytes that help give you energy throughout the day.  So in the morning your body needs to be rehydrated and lemon water is best to rejuvenate the cells.   Not only does it flush out toxins but it will help regulate kidney function.  It’s also a great digestive aid to amp up your ability to process food.

If that isn’t enough reason to start drinking a tall glass of lemon water I will compose the top ten reasons you need to start your day off with a tall glass of freshly squeezed lemon juice.

1. Being an emergency medical technician you are trained size up the patient first by assessing their ABC’s.  Lemon juice helps all three.
2. Lemon water can help the body maintain its pH.  Lemon water has a alkalizing effect on the body.  Studies show disease can not survive in an alkaline environment.
3. Lemon water is a good source of vitamin C.  A natural source of this vitamin has been proven to fight off colds and flu. It’s also essential for skin cells.
4. Freshly squeezed lemon water can reduce joint pain by nutralizing uric acid in the blood.  High levels of this acid is known to cause gout.
5. This water will help dissolve kidney stones, gallstones, pancreatic stones.  It does this by removing calcium build up.
6. Lemon water supports proper function of the nervous system which can reduce effects of depression and anxiety.  Potassium is essential for nerve function and is naturally occurring in lemons.
7. Many people suffer with hypertension.  Lemon water will cleanse the blood resulting in lower blood pressure.
8. People who drink lemon water find it easier to lose weight due to the pectin fiber that is available in lemons.
9. Freshly squeezed lemon water can prevent cancer by creating an environment that is unsuitable for cancer cells to develop.
10. Finally lemon water has impeccable effects on our metabolism.  It behooves you to drink water with lemon because of the valuable antioxidants.  Antioxidants have been shown to help eliminate free radicals.

So when I get up the first thing on my mind is to get a tall glass of freshly squeezed lemon juice into my body.  Being that I was diagnosed with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis 24 years ago I need this anti-inflammatory food.

image

The best and fastest way to make lemon water is to cut a fresh lemon in half and squeeze it into a tall glass.  I use a tool that I purchased at Kohls.  I then add filtered water from my refrigerator.  The filter in my refrigerator adds magnesium to our water.  I found that by drinking lemon water I’m decreasing the symptoms of my autoimmune disease.  If you would like to research more about positive effects of lemon juice go to http://www.pubmed.gov.  If you want to learn more about psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis go to my Facebook page Overcoming Psoriasis
According to my dentist you should brush after drinking lemon water.

Minerals help Psoriasis

With the winter months approaching so does the itch and pain associated with psoriasis.   How do you deal with your psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis during these months?  I spoke to a friend of mine from our support group Overcoming Psoriasis .  Eddie McEvoy, “I developed psoriasis at the age of 15 and psoriatic arthritis at the age of 26.”

image

I find his story similar to my own.  We get diagnosed with a chronic disease that has no cure.  We then find ourselves researching everywhere to find a solution.  Eddie had to have shoulder surgery.  He needed to take pain medication.  Eddie said, “taking naproxin and salfasalzine and solpadol pain killers, also tramadol at night to help sleep.”

image

Eddie shared his story because he believes it might help someone else who has our disease.  Eddie’s story takes a turn for the worst.  “Last July I collapsed and required 3 pints saline solution till they got me blood, then 4 pints of blood, I had lost it somewhere (they never found the source of the leak).  I met someone who pointed me in the direction of minerals, now take magnesium and boron, other additions are coconut oil for everything, and hymalain salt which I use a lot. I believe the magnesium is the big player in my recovery, Magnesium Citrate is beneficial for so many things and is used in 350 processes of the body.  So I am studying magnesium and also Iodine as it plays an important role in our health too.”

“I am 60 years of age and have had no arthritis medication for 1 year now.
Also a massive player is Magnesium salt baths, I take one every day when at home. Soak in it for 20 min, it removes toxins and your joints soak up the magnesium, I also have magnesium oil sprays which I carry all the time and spray them onto my joints that may feel a bit sore now and again.”

Eddie wants you to know, “I made the mistake of using magnesium oxide at first, (it is less bowl tolerant)

Hamptons Bike Tour Event May 14th 2016

image

Hamptons Tour is well on its way.  I’m excited that the NPF has chosen NY to lead the way in a series of rides set to take place across the country.  In collaboration with Novartis and the Duck Walk Vineyards located in Watermill NY, our first NY event will take place on Saturday, May 14, 2016.

We will have four rides to choose from; 10, 25, 62, and 100 miles.  We want this to be a fun event for all levels of cycle enthusiasts.   Duck Walk Vineyards is the perfect setting to kick-off and end our event!

Rob from the NPF and I had the opportunity to select the location out of four locations.  This venue definitely fit perfectly with what we were looking for.  We will be setting up in the middle of the vineyard.  There is a clearing that makes this the perfect spot to take in the beautiful scenery surrounding the event.

The corks will be opened and the cheese will be served with the vines all around us.  A live band and food will be provided for all to enjoy.  Corporate sponsors are welcome.  Volunteers are needed.  Teams are encouraged to sign-up early.

We’ve already started to canvas the area.  Some people already said yes to helping out.  Businesses are also willing to help with our cause.  Let’s make this a wonderful event to be remembered for a lifetime.  Help me help the 7.5 million Americans with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.   Email me at tvsoccerdad@yahoo.com or call Todd at 631.487.5857 for more information on how you can get involved!!

Model Advocate with Psoriasis.

People who suffer with the visible skin disease psoriasis often feel invisible in society. Imagine being asked to leave a public pool because of your visible plaque psoriasis. What long term effect will this situation have on that particular individual?

Because psoriasis is visible, it is often perceived to be contagious. In fact, that’s the misconception I spend most of my time explaining to the general public. Psoriasis is not contagious and it’s not just a skin disease. The visual red flakey blotches on the surface are just a symptom of the inflammation happening underneath. In a recent study, it revealed this skin disease can cause heart disease, cancer, arthritis, and depression if left untreated.

Pharmaceutical companies have been working feverishly to develop new treatments. Many doctors and patients are not comfortable trying some of these new medications. Moderate to severe patients could be doing more harm than good without drug intervention. Patients need to be their own advocates and educate themselves to make a informed decision. The most reliable source of information these days is the National Psoriasis Foundation .

Models strive to be perfect for the camera lens. One runway model that won’t let her skin disease deter her from being photographed is Joleen Obie Trail. Joleen was diagnosed at 18 with a mild case of psoriasis appearing on her elbows and knees. She was able to continue her career in modeling by having the make-up artist cover her spots. Later on in her career, at the age of 32, her psoriasis became severe because she “caught a serious cold from a very stressful situation” causing her to flare.  She also had a run-in with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) so she had to avoid foods with gluten.

I asked Joleen, “What are you doing to help your psoriasis?”

She responded, “I try to avoid nightshades. I only had tomatoes twice this year. I reckon that helped. I avoid eggplant and peppers. I will occasionally have potatoes. I try and follow the Dr. Pagano’s Diet. I use Dovobet, but only on my elbows and just tar and coconut oil on my legs. The Pagano Diet is so strict and difficult to follow. I like the concept of his diet and I eat brown rice instead of white rice. Spelt pasta instead of wheat. I do things that I like that make my body happy, such as yoga, swimming, and walking!

Next I asked, “What advice would you like to share with other psoriasis patients?”

Joleen: I think the most important thing is to be proactive as soon as possible. I encourage others to buy the book Dr Pagano’s, “Healing Psoriasis.”  Join a support group and educate yourself about psoriasis.  Magnesium baths with lavender oil are wonderful and soothing. I’ve used acupuncture and Chinese herbs. Oregano oil and a good foundation to cover it when needed! Just stay on top of it and don’t let it get the best of you. Life is meant to be enjoyed!

I travel the world as a model and always strive to be my best. My psoriasis has taught me to lead a much more peaceful life now! I am content with where I live. I don’t have any plans to change. I am happy with the simple things like good healthy yummy food and taking my dog to the beach. I adore gardening and lying in the sunshine. Nature inspires me and my gorgeous man who loves and supports me!

Joleen is an advocate for models all around the world. She is changing the industry standards. She says, “Healthy women and healthy models.” New laws are being implemented to protect models from becoming bulimic or anorexic. These laws will require models to have a certain BMI (Body Mass Index). Models will be required to carry doctor’s certificates, reporting their healthy status. It’s extremely unhealthy and unrealistic for woman to be portrayed in this light.

Joleen now resides in Australia. The sun is known to help slow down the replication of skin cells of psoriasis, which is reproducing cells ten times faster than normal. Joleen is an active member of our support group Overcoming Psoriasis .
